ROME. PIAZZA DEL POPOLO.
Curated by Paolo Levi.
Sale del Bramante - Piazza del Popolo - Rome. 19-29 May 2015
Organised by EA EDITORE PALERMO
The atmospheric Sale del Bramante, former studio of the illustrious Renaissance architect,
by the Aurelian walls next to the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, will house over two
hundred works by Italian and foreign artists from 19 to 29 May 2015. The “PIAZZA DEL
POPOLO international exhibition, from Caravaggio to the present day”, brainchild of the
critic and writer Sandro Serradifalco, chief director of EA EDITORE in Palermo, is curated
by the art critic Paolo Levi, director of EFFETTO ARTE magazine.
The city of Rome, ancient capital of art and of the most eclectic experimentation,
welcomes this event, which is essentially intended to showcase independent creativity as
the weapon of choice of freedom and emancipation. Through an encounter of numerous
different voices, all equally representative of the broad landscape of contemporary art, the
exhibition seeks to highlight the diversity of today’s trends, suspended between tradition
and its natural stylistic evolution. If ever there has been a privileged meeting place for
artists, writers and film makers, it is Piazza del Popolo: from a symbol of Renaissance
patronage to a venue for public spectacles and city events, in the sixties it was the scene
of the famous “School of Piazza del Popolo” art movement, inspired by the painters Mario
Schifano, Tano Festa and Franco Angeli. The entire intellectual scene of the capital
gravitated around the tables of the Rosati and the Canova, the cafés on the Piazza,
featuring figures such as Guttuso, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Alberto Moravia and Ennio Flaiano.
They made this corner of Rome the chosen rendezvous of free thought, beyond
conventional constraints, and of an unrestrained cosmopolitan creativity rivalling that of
capitals such as Paris and New York. Besides these nostalgic memories, the twin
churches of Santa Maria di Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli, the church of Santa
Maria del Popolo, the Flaminio obelisk and the two fountains by Valadier make Piazza del
Popolo resplendent with that eternal majesty emblematic of Roman history and culture,
today just as in the past. The official opening and awards ceremonies will be held on 19
May at 5:30 pm. The speakers include publisher Sandro Serradifalco, art critic Salvatore
Russo art consultant Francesco Saverio Russo and art critic Serena Carlino. The
guest of honour will be Prof. Paolo Levi, the curator of the event. The works exhibited are
published in the March/April 2015 edition of EFFETTO ARTE magazine.
The exhibition will be open to the public until 29 May.
Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm and 2:30 - 6:00 pm;
Sunday: 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.
